How to reach Kedarkantha
Sankri is the base camp of Kedarkantha trek. To reach Kedarkantha you need to reach Sankri from Dehradun — around 200 km, taking 8 to 10 hours by government bus or taxi.
By Train/Road: Dehradun is well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata; from Dehradun to Sankri takes around 10 hours by road.
By Flight: Reach Dehradun from Delhi by flight (55 minutes), then continue to Sankri by road (around 10 hours).
The Legend
Kedarkantha trek is rooted in mythology. The place gets its name from 'Kedar Khand', translating to 'Section of Lord Shiva'. Legend has it that Lord Shiva once meditated in Kedarkantha before relocating to Kedarnath.
Best Time & Difficulty
The Kedarkantha trek length is 20 km covered over 6 days. It is a moderate to difficult grade trek that can be done by beginners with a basic fitness level.
Winter (mid-Dec to end of April) is the best time to visit, with temperatures dropping to -10°C. Summer months (April–June) see temperatures between 0–20°C, making the trek easier for beginners.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Sankri From Dehradun
Altitude 6,400 ft · 210 km drive · 10 hoursEarly start from Dehradun, arriving at Sankri by 5 pm. Accommodation and food in Guest House. A pick-up is arranged at Dehradun with pick-up points coordinated by email prior to booking.
Day 2: Start from Sankri to Juda ka Talab
6,400 ft → 9,100 ft · 4 km trek · 5 hoursTrek from Sankri road into local trails and forest via Saud village. Camp at Juda Ka Talab, a closed campsite surrounded by tall pine and oak trees.
Day 3: Juda ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp
9,100 ft → 11,250 ft · 4 km trek · 2.5 hoursTrek through pine and oak trees to the open highlands below the summit, reaching a wide meadow with excellent picturesque views towards the Dhauladhar Ranges.
Day 4: Kedarkantha base to peak, then descend to Hargaon
11,250 ft → 12,500 ft → 8,900 ft · 6 km · 7 hoursA long day climbing steep slopes to the summit for sunrise, with a 360-degree view of the Himalayas, before returning to base camp for lunch and descending to Hargaon.
Day 5: Hargaon camp to Sankri
8,900 ft → 6,400 ft · 6 km · 4 hoursDescend through a well-paved, stone-laden route with views of Har ki Dun valley. Overnight stay at a hotel in Sankri.
Day 6: Sankri to Dehradun
210 km drive · 10 hoursTravel back to Dehradun in a pre-booked vehicle, dropped at Dehradun station.
